General

The header is usually the top portion of a website that contains the site title and sometimes a visual representation such as a collage or photo.

h1

In KarmaCMS the header technically only contains the site title which is inside a <h1></h1>. There is no place in the Wizard for styling the h1, but you can do so in Custom CSS.

Dimension: height

Here you have the usual style options as well as a place to set the height. This is the only place on the Wizard other than Custom CSS where you can adjust the height of a layer/division. In many layouts it's desirable to have the main photo the same height as the header where neither of them are variable.

Gotchas

Floats

In many layouts the main photo appears to be inside the header when in it actually floats beside it. When this happens keep in mind that IE6 treats the header differently than every other browser. IE6 will move the header over by the width of the photo including the background. If you are counting on the background being there for asthetic purposes, you have to also place the header background on the main photo.

Default Padding

Some layouts have default top padding to simulate vertical centering. To remove this you must place "0px" in the top padding input box.

Note: the padding in the header tab actually applied to the h1 for cross-browser compatibility.

Disable Title

The header has a unique option to disable the server generated site title. Doing so will make the title disappear but will keep the container able to be styled if need be.

The ability to turn off the site title comes in handy for those who wish to create a custom header that contains a logo. If you'd like to try that, simply upload your logo as the header background image.

Graphic Font

The header is one of the four places where you can replace text with a graphical font of your choice. The site title entered in the main preferences in KarmaCMS will control what the graphic says.

General

The Main Links are the principal navigation in your website to other "pages" and arguable the most important part of your site. Depending on your layout they can appear in different places; some are horizontal and under the header, some are vertical and above the teasers, others are at the very top of the page, and some are split into horizontal and vertical groups.

The links can be split into two groups in the KarmaCMS main preferences by inserting the dashed line, "---". When they are split they are controlled by main links group 1 and main links group 2. The dashed line isn't inserted by default so all links are in group 1 unless you change that.

In every situation the main links are a variable height so a height should never be placed on them. Anything under this div should be able to move down naturally as the main links expand. Usually it is the flexible nature of the main links that throws designers not experienced with dynamic design for a loop.
